Storyboards
A shortlist collection of old storyboards from past projects. Some are scene pitches or animatics, and others are just clips.
MEET THE GIRLS (PLANE FIGHT)
KPOP Demon Hunters
Story Pitch | Story Reel | Comp1, Comp2
Intro of the film I was asked to re-write as an Intro to the characters, their world, tone, music-video fighting style, and just to be an overall tentpole target to aim for.
I also used my brother as insp for Mira. Alex Chiu also did some incredible plussing in the following iteration! Without an actual film to show back then, this was used in securing the original music deals with Black Label (BTS, BlackPink) - yes, that is cool.
MEET UGLY
KPOP Demon Hunters
Story Pitch | Story Reel | Comp
First encounter with the Saja boys, and a K-Drama “meet cute–but ugly”, between Rumi and Jinu to kick off their relationship with a love/hate foundation.
I think Maggie was the only one who believed in ‘Ab-eyes’ at first, and Jessie Wong took it to the next level. Story Reel includes boards by Jessica Stanley.
DERP TIGER
Story Pitch | Story Reel | Comp
My first take on “Derpy”. Helen and Maggie really wanted Derpy in the movie so this was my attempt to sell how our Derp Tiger could work on screen for studio buyoff.
VO for Derp and pots sfx in my garage. Helen did the original painting of Derpy’s appearance based on Korean traditional artwork. His performance was inspired by our family’s cat Mister Meowgi (who is incredibly clumsy and overall bad at being a cat). The birdie performance was inspired by Meowgi’s sister Cleopawtra Jones who was by contrast the perfect cat, and always low-key ashamed of her clumsy brother. Rad and Omar finalized the design for Derpy and this final story Reel includes boards by Jessie Wong and Christina Chang as well.
PO’s DREAM (2D Intro)
Kung-Fu Panda
Thumbnails | Story Reel | Comp
This is the Intro to the film I wrote and conceived from blank page in my third year on the film when the Directors launched me with "Show us your 'Jed vision’ of this movie”. In year one I’d done a 'fanboy’ version of Po the studio liked, and this was them wanting to bring that back after having explored a version of Po who hated Kung-Fu (booo). I also did a 2D animatic to convince Dreamworks to re-open a shuttered 2D division for its production.
This became the sequence Jeffrey Katzenberg used to sell and represent the film to third party distributors and partners.
Tai Lung vs The Five (Bridge Fight)
Kung-Fu Panda
In the eleventh hour as Story came to a close, I was given a hail mary launch to completely re-invent our midpoint, once again from a blank slate. Most of my time on Kung-Fu Panda had been very Po-centric, but they knew I had a take on animal style I’d been pitching for years and finally gave me a chance to share it. I worked alongside production on this to ensure we could build it since we were down to the wire.
Originally it was on a ‘river of wind’ which we couldn’t afford but the rest of the scenario was greenlit.
Sugar Rush Final Race
Wreck-It Ralph
My launch here on top of the normal story work, was to also re-conceive of Sugar Rush to be not a racing world, but specifically a kart-racing video game world.
I did a large amount of narrative design work alongside this sequence, approaching it as such to help ensure it felt authentically a video game.
Hero’s Duty
Wreck-It Ralph
My launch here on top of the normal story work was to also reconceive of this world as not just a ‘starship troopers’ type thing but specifically a popular sci-fi FPS video game.
I did a large amount of narrative design work alongside this sequence, approaching it as such to help ensure it felt authentically a video game.
Meet Duke
Secret Life of Pets
This was the first time Max meets his new ‘roommate for life’ Duke. This was also the first film said to find the tone of the film and then first put into production.
